Fuerte y batería artillera que defendía la ría y la entrada de Bilbao (Bizkaia) por el camino de Durango. Tuvo función destacada en las dos guerras carlistas; tomado por Zumalacárregui en su frustrado intento de conquistar la villa en 1835, fue punto clave de defensa durante el sitio de 1873.
