Hijo de Pedro de Cartagena procurador en Cortes por Burgos, y sobrino del obispo de Burgos, Pedro de Cartagena, todos ellos judíos conversos. Acompañó al conde de Haro en la batalla de Mungia en 1471, donde encontró la muerte.
