Sailors

Zubia, Jose Maria

Sailing master. Born in Zumaia in 1890. Died on 9 January 1866.

Fisherman and son of fishermen. A skilled navigator who loved risk and adventure. He enlisted on a frigate to try his luck in South America. He returned a few years later and settled in San Sebastián, working as the skipper of a fishing boat. He performed numerous heroic acts, rescuing sailors on the verge of shipwreck. One of his most famous rescues took place in 1861 when, after a colossal gale broke out, he gathered nine volunteers who dared to go out in search of a boat that was barely staying afloat off the Zurriola beach. Their feat earned them the Grand Cross of Charity awarded by the Minister of the Navy. On 9 January 1866, in a similar situation, he went out to rescue other boats, but this time his boat returned to shore without him, as he was swept away by a wave and never seen again. The current rowing club in his hometown bears his name in honour of his achievements.
