Etimología. Hay discrepancia sobre el significado de ai- en los topónimos y apellidos. M. Lecuona le da valor de «peña» (Peña de Aya); en cambio otros autores lo traducen por «declive». Debe descartarse el topónimo donostiarra Ayete procedente del nombre gascón del «haya».
