Natural de Tolosa (Gipuzkoa), hijo de Martín de Burruza y de Catalina de Zurueta. Su padre sirvió al Rey Católico en las empresas de Navarra y de Italia. Pasó a Nueva España (Méjico), con Luis Ponce y fue el primero en establecer el servicio de mensajeros entre Méjico y Veracruz.
