Sculptors

Eguizabal, Juan Jose

Contemporary sculptor, born in Logroño in 1961. He lives and works in Vitoria.

He became known on the Alava scene in the mid-1980s thanks to the Sculpture Workshops sponsored by the Town Council of Vitoria. He is the creator of one of the main emblems of the city in recent times: the figure of El caminante de la Plaza del Arca. This work, conceived during the 1985 Outdoor Sculpture Workshops, is 3.5 metres high, originally made of fibreglass and polyester, and was cast in bronze in 1989.

As a modern sculptor, Eguizábal works with a wide range of materials, including industrial scrap metals. Together with Marco Ibáñez de Matauco, one of his colleagues in the 1984 Sculpture Workshop, he created a homage to the popular marathon using abandoned and rusty metal objects. This piece, located in the vicinity of the Beti-Jai frontons in Mendizorroza, has been removed from its original location as part of the new reordering of sculptures in public spaces designed by the municipal council from 2002 onwards.

From an idea of the Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Father José Miguel de Barandiarán in 1989, this sculptor erected the structure of a dolmen with stone from Treviño. The megalithic recreation is located in a garden in Calle Chile in the capital of Alava.
