Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo School of Lekaroz

The school was founded by the Capuchin Fathers in Lekaroz and has been in existence for 100 years (1890-1990).

The first stone was blessed and laid on 22 April 1888 and on 3 December 1890 the first group of students arrived. The church was inaugurated in 1891.

The facilities were originally intended to be self-supporting, with workshops staffed by craftsmen. The college evolved into less self-sufficient forms and new buildings were added in 1897, 1925 and 1930. These buildings covered the school's needs in terms of new classrooms, offices, laboratories, etc. On the night of the 9th to 10th December 1962, part of the school suffered a fire and the decision was taken to extend it with new pavilions. This extension, known as Colegio Nuevo, was inaugurated in 1968 and the sports centre was opened in 1980.

Conceived exclusively as a boarding school, it was not until 1941 that it was decided to open enrolment to external students. At the beginning of its existence, the school was oriented towards Capuchin vocational students, but from the beginning of the twentieth century, the predominant educational programmes in Lecároz were high school and commerce students.

The school remained active despite the ups and downs of history, which converted its buildings into a hospital in 1936 and lost 17 of its teachers, banished by the new regime. The last school year in Lécaroz was 1989-1990. That same year the Colegio Nuevo was sold to the Government of Navarre and became the Baztan Secondary School and a youth el. In 2003 the Capuchin community definitively abandoned the convent (the original old building), which was also bought by the Government of Navarre and demolished in 2009, leaving only the church standing.
