BASAGOITI ZABALA, Alfontso

Biscayan businessman born in Madrid in 1948. Graduate in Economics. In 1983 he was appointed deputy for the Treasury and Finance of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. He was also a member of the Basque Finance Council and of the utive committee of the Caja de Ahorros de Vizcaína, until 1987, when he became part of the new Basque government team as Minister of the Treasury and Finance.

He was also managing director of the company Gestión Integral de Inversiones and a member of the board of directors of several financial and industrial companies. Basagoiti left his post as Minister of Finance in February 1991, and at the beginning of 1991 he was appointed director of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (BBV), where he later became managing director.

He became chairman of Corporación IBV, Servicios y Tecnología (1991), from where IBV manages the companies on a permanent basis within the group and does not operate as a holding company. Within the BBV group structure, in the nineties he was also assistant to the bank's chairman, Emilio Ybarra, as well as chairman of Euroseguros, an insurance company wholly controlled by BBV and dedicated to bank insurance.

President of the Círculo de Empresarios Vascos, he stepped down in January 2001 and was succeeded by José María Vizcaino. In October of the same year he was appointed chairman of the board of directors of Gamesa Producciones Aeronáuticas (GPA).
