ABREGO DE LACY, José María

Theologo and teacher born in Pamplona (Navarra) on March 25, 1945. Jesuit. Son of José M. Abrego Narvarte, a remonta pelotari known as Abrego II, and nephew of the most famous of the saga, Jesús. He began his studies in his hometown, first at the Colegio de las Vedrunas and later at the Colegio de San Ignacio de los Jesuitas. At the age of 11 he moved to the San Francisco Javier College (Javier, Navarra), which was a Jesuit minor seminary. In the 1961-1962 academic year he returned to Pamplona to attend the Pre-University (PREU). Entering the Society of Jesus at the end of high school because it was, in his opinion, "the natural way to channel all the youthful idealism of service and solidarity", according to his own words, and thereby culminating his early vocation.Although his original desire was to go to Ibero-America to exercise his ministry, he was not chosen by his superiors, with other paths to follow in his ecclesiastical and professional career. He completed his studies at "Berchmanskolleg", Pullach Faculty of Philosophy (Munich, Germany), where he obtained a degree in Philosophy in 1968, specializing in Biblical studies in Rome and Jerusalem 1968 and 1970, returning to Bilbao to study Theology (1970-1973). This last year, he graduated in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institution in Rome, where he remained until 1977, preparing the courses and the corresponding doctoral thesis. In said Roman Institution, he completed his studies with a doctorate in Sacred Scripture in 1982. Since 1977, he has combined his stay in Rome with his work as a professor of Sacred Scripture at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Deusto, occupying the same position. c tedra in 1986.He presided over the State Board of Deans of Theology in 1990-1991 and was secretary of the Board of Deans of Spain and Portugal in 1993-1994. In 1991 he was appointed Vice Dean of Students at the University of Deusto, until assuming the position of rector in 1996. Author of books, articles and conferences on Bioethics, Old Testament and Eschatology. In addition to his teaching work, he has held the following positions in Deusto: Dean of the Faculty of Theology (1988-1994); Vice Chancellor for Students (1991-1996) and, since 1996, he has been the Magnificent Chancellor of the same.Among his publications it is worth mentioning: Jeremiah and the end of the kingdom.
